Sew By Numbers

Soft toys from a home inkjet printer.

Before Thingiverse, Sew By Numbers was a project to digitize soft toys, inspired by the flour sack dolls my grandmother played with, and also by Cubeecraft.

Sew By Numbers dolls are three-dimensional pieces of art that can be designed in their flat state and assembled even by novice seamsters.  Most of the assembly instructions are contained in the pattern’s seam allowances, meaning the doll can be assembled even if the text instructions, contained in the scrap areas of the print, are lost.

The Sew By Numbers website launched with designs by myself, Jolie Pagel, and Aaron Ancheta.  The open source design was featured on Thingiverse and  Andrea Phillips held an SBN sewing circle at Foo Camp.

I also used the template to create “sketch dolls” for my trip to San Diego Comic Con 2010, and came away with this collection of amazing artist dolls.
